The Problem

A medical equipment manufacturer of very close tolerance components had a goods-in and stores with 5 tonnes of metal, consisting predominantly of aluminium and brass rounds sections and tubes.

Excess stock was held on many product lines but the stores were too small for the volume of material, leading to picking and traceability problems. The company's stockholding and inventory computer systems were not designed to allow for the cutting of semi-fabricated products. One saw was used to cut all products. Although the company was expanding, more land in the existing residential area was unobtainable.

The Solution

Over a period of several months. we held detailed discussions with the customer and together reviewed the product ranges. Most products were removed from the customers' stock. We provided bar-code technology information to allow the customer to integrate with our traceability and numbering systems into the company's own computer system, offering a seamless solution.
