Copper has been around for 1,000's of years and is a popular commercial product today. The alloy offers performance capabilities that are attractive to numerous applications. Features include excellent electrical and heat conductivity, good machinability and excellent corrosion resistance.
Copper alloys are known for excellent oxidation corrosion resistance and perform well in marine atmospheres. Copper-nickel alloys (or cupronickel) offer superior resistance to saltwater. The material's surface forms a blue-green coating (or patina) after prolonged exposure to atmospheric elements. The alloy will benefit from surface coating to maintain an acceptable aesthetic appearance in such cases.
